“…Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the cares of God. And you count far more to Him than birds.” Matthew 6:26 MSG
Have you ever taken time to sit in a quiet moment and listen to the birds sing out?
There is a peacefulness that comes with it. My brother and I had a good laugh recently talking about how the birds have really been getting beside themselves during this whole “lockdown” situation, just being loud and unbothered in the early hours of the morning when rest for beauty is in order. And if you haven’t had the birds carelessly wake you up at 4 in the morning or sing so loudly that the person on the other line ask “Sis, when did you get the pet and what did you name him?” then may the Lord of heaven continue to call you blessed my friend😒😂.
Nonetheless, the Lord has pointed something out in the scriptures here that He wants us to understand. He says, “yeah they might be loud, rude, and intruding on your beauty sleep but above all of that they are free and unfettered.” If you are like me, I had to look up what unfettered means, I assumed just from the context that it meant unbothered which would make sense and applies. But unfettered means “release from restraint or inhibition”; Jesus wants us to see here that it’s not just about being unbothered but this overall notion of being completely released from any restraints, the ultimate image of freedom. And he points out how they aren’t tied down by the things of this world that sometimes define us but that they live carefree in the cares of God.
When was the last time you gave yourself a moment to be carefree in the cares of God? It can be easier said than done, trust me I know. With social media consistently replaying the injustices that the news won’t give voice to and adding to the burdens of our hearts, but I believe that God includes this small detail about the birds for a reason. Jesus is inviting us daily to cast our burdens on him, reminding us to take time to be released from these things that weigh on our minds and allow ourselves to breathe in, let go, and receive what we need. Completely carefree in Christ. He is that safe space.
What does that moment look like for you?
What would it look like for you let go in that safe space?
What are the things that have been so heavy on your heart/mind that God is calling you to be released from in His presence? In this moment?
He goes on to say in the scriptures “Don’t you count far more to God than the birds that fly?” if God would be so gracious to allow the birds to live a life that is released from restraints and the weight of the world how much more is He calling His sons and daughters to live in this freedom. He doesn’t mention the birds not having their own work to do for survival (there are plenty of documentaries you can find on National Geographic that will give you the scoop on the daily task of a birds life) but he says they are not burdened by them.
We are all called to be that light in the dark, but when you live in a world that seems just fine with living in the shadows it can become tiring to continue choosing everyday to be the light despite and this is why it’s so important to answer the call to bring ourselves and the things we carry on a day-to-day to Him so that he can refresh our minds, bodies, and spirits.
Take a moment today to respond to God calling you to meet Him in the safe place. Let go of what you think your time with Him should be and allow yourself to unpack in his presence. Let Him have the things that are weighing on your mind and heart. I promise He knows exactly what to do with them.
“Pile your troubles on God’s shoulders—he’ll carry your load, he’ll help you out. He’ll never let good people topple into ruin. But you, God, will throw the others into a muddy bog, cut the lifespan of assassins and traitors in half. And I trust in you.” – Psalm 55:22 MSG
